Solana Launches Alpenglow, Its Most Ambitious Upgrade Since 2020
Solana Alpenglow upgrade — The Solana network has successfully activated its Alpenglow upgrade, a foundational overhaul of its consensus mechanism that developers describe as its most ambitious change since the blockchain’s 2020 launch.
The upgrade, which went live on October 21, 2026, officially retires the original TowerBFT consensus protocol. This system has been the backbone of Solana’s transaction validation and block production since its inception. The transition to the new Alpenglow consensus was executed via a handoff process on the live mainnet.
Developers have drawn parallels between the scale of Alpenglow and Ethereum‘s landmark Merge upgrade, which transitioned that network to proof-of-stake. The change is designed to enhance the network’s underlying architecture, though specific performance metrics or new features were not detailed in the initial announcement.
The successful deployment marks a significant milestone for Solana, representing a core evolution of its protocol six years after its mainnet launch. The network continues to operate with its native SOL token trading above $107 at the time of the upgrade.
