- Snapshot September 2026
Solana is a monolithic L1 that keeps execution, consensus and data on one chain instead of pushing activity to rollups. The product pitch is simple: high throughput, low fees, a single environment for wallets and apps. That is why it became the default venue for meme coins, consumer NFTs and several payments experiments.
Speed is not free. Solana has halted or degraded under load more than bitcoin or Ethereum L1. The 2026 story is whether client diversity (including Firedancer) turns that history into a footnote. Until it does, treat uptime as a feature you verify, not a slogan you trust.
How to use it
SOL is the gas and staking asset. For trading, the chain is excellent. For large, irreversible savings, many desks still size Solana smaller than BTC/ETH because of operational history. Always confirm you are on the real solana.com domain and a known wallet. This is not a buy rating.
What can go wrong
Congestion, spam, validator issues and the usual DeFi exploits. Cheap block space attracts both real apps and industrial-grade junk. If you cannot explain why a token exists beyond “it is pumping,” you are not doing research.
What works
- Fast, cheap UX that actually works for consumer apps
- Deep retail flow: memecoins, DeFi, DePIN and payments experiments
- Firedancer and client diversity are a serious reliability bet
What to watch
- Network halts and degraded performance are part of the track record
- Validator and stake concentration is an ongoing debate
- Retail flow is noisy — a lot of activity is speculation, not savings
