Ethereum Researchers Urge ‘Bunker Mode’ for Bitcoin, Ether Against AI Attack Risk

Ethereum researchers have issued a stark warning that artificial intelligence could potentially break the cryptographic signatures securing Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets, urging large holders to prepare a defensive “bunker mode.”
Researcher Justin Drake cautioned that AI could theoretically crack the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) used by Bitcoin and Ethereum “in months, not years” in a worst-case scenario. This threat is seen as potentially arriving well before the advent of practical quantum computers. While no such AI attack has been demonstrated, Drake advised high-value holders to begin gradually moving funds to new addresses whose public keys have never been exposed on the blockchain.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin echoed concerns, noting that AI could also weaken some proposed forms of quantum-resistant cryptography. He warned that rushed, large-scale wallet migrations could themselves lead to significant losses if not executed carefully.
The call to action highlights the crypto industry’s growing focus on long-term security threats beyond quantum computing. Researchers stress that while the AI risk is currently theoretical, proactive preparation is prudent for safeguarding major assets.
