Vitalik Buterin Backs Crypto ‘Bunker Mode’ Over AI Math Threat

crypto bunker mode — Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has endorsed a call for the crypto industry to prepare for ‘bunker mode,’ warning that rapid advances in artificial intelligence could break today’s cryptographic security before quantum computers do.
Buterin was responding to a post from Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, who urged a gradual migration of funds to fresh wallets. The concern stems from AI’s accelerating ability to solve complex mathematical problems, potentially cracking the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) that secures most crypto wallets.
Drake cited OpenAI’s recent release of hundreds of new mathematical findings and its solution of the famously difficult Navier-Stokes equation as evidence of the pace of progress. “Recent days have been humbling for human mathematical intuition. Long-held, unquestioned hypotheses have fallen,” Drake wrote.
Buterin extended the warning beyond elliptic curves to lattice-based cryptography, which is often considered quantum-resistant. He suggested that AI-driven math advances could also seriously weaken these systems in the coming years, reinforcing Ethereum’s move toward a ‘hash-only’ cryptographic direction in its roadmap.
