Ethereum Researcher Urges ‘Bunker Mode’ Over Private Key Recovery Risk

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake has called for “bunker mode” planning, recommending users move crypto assets to fresh addresses to mitigate risks from future private key recovery technologies.

Drake’s warning, shared in a social media post, centers on the potential for advancements in cryptography and quantum computing to eventually break current public-key cryptography. He specifically highlighted the risk of “cryptographic collapse,” where today’s encrypted data could be retroactively decrypted in the future.

The core recommendation is for users to generate new wallets where the public key is not directly exposed on-chain but is instead concealed behind a hash, such as in a stealth address setup. This makes the public key significantly harder for a future adversary to capture and target for decryption.

Drake framed this as a long-term, defensive strategy, suggesting that assets intended to be held for decades should be moved to these more secure addresses now. The call underscores growing discussions within the crypto community about preparing for cryptographic transitions well before they become an immediate threat.
