South Korean officials to meet crypto exchanges over tax delay calls

south-korea-1

tax delay — South Korean finance officials will meet with major cryptocurrency exchanges this week as pressure mounts to delay a planned digital asset tax scheduled for January 2027.

The consultation, set for Tuesday, will include representatives from Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, DigitalX, and Gopax, as well as the Digital Asset Exchange Alliance (DAXA). Senior officials from the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Financial Services Commission will attend.

The meeting follows a new legislative proposal introduced last Friday by lawmaker Park Min-gyu of the Democratic Party of Korea. The bill seeks to postpone the tax until January 1 of the second year after South Korea begins sharing data under the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF). With the first data exchange expected in 2027, this would push the tax start date to 2029.

Industry representatives have cited unresolved transaction rules and insufficient time to prepare necessary infrastructure as reasons for another delay. South Korea has already postponed the implementation of its crypto tax three times.
