Australia Drafts Bill for OECD Crypto Tax Reporting Framework

Australia has released draft legislation to implement an international crypto tax reporting standard, aiming to begin automatic data exchanges with other countries by 2028.
The draft Treasury Laws Amendment Bill 2026 would establish the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) in Australian law. The bill also introduces a domestic reporting regime for crypto assets.
The legislation is open for public comment until October 28, 2026. Australia is one of 77 jurisdictions committed to adopting CARF, which the OECD created in 2022 to combat tax evasion risks from the growth of crypto assets.
The Australian government first signaled its intention to implement CARF in late 2023 and consulted on its approach in 2024. It confirmed plans for both the international framework and a domestic regime in its 2025–26 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook.
