Quantum Alliance forms to defend 6.4 million vulnerable bitcoin

A new industry group has formed to address the future threat quantum computers pose to Bitcoin, with experts warning that wallets holding an estimated 6.4 million BTC could be vulnerable.
The Quantum Alliance, launched by nine crypto companies, aims to develop standards to help blockchains adopt quantum-resistant security. The alliance is a response to long-standing warnings that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could one day crack the cryptographic keys protecting certain Bitcoin wallets.
Researchers are divided on the timeline for this threat. While no existing quantum machine poses a current risk, some experts have cited 2028 as a realistic timeframe for the emergence of such a capability. The vulnerable BTC includes an estimated 1.1 million coins attributed to Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
The formation of the alliance highlights the complex coordination challenge ahead. Any security upgrade to protect these assets would require broad consensus across the Bitcoin ecosystem, and proposals to preemptively move or freeze vulnerable coins have raised significant concerns about property rights and network neutrality.
