Vitalik Buterin Envisions Ethereum’s Evolution Beyond a Blockchain by 2030

Ethereum evolution — Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a sweeping vision for the network’s evolution by 2030, suggesting it may no longer function as ‘just a blockchain’ but as a more efficient ‘cryptographic world computer.’

In a detailed post, Buterin described a future system that integrates the base Ethereum blockchain with advanced cryptographic proofs and off-chain computer networks. The core goal is to enable the network to process significantly more work without forcing every participant to redundantly repeat the same calculations, a major bottleneck in current blockchain scaling.

This proposed architecture aims to allow users to independently and efficiently verify transaction results while enhancing privacy for payments, balances, and wallet activity. Buterin indicated that Ethereum’s transformation is set to accelerate following the planned Hegotá upgrade.

However, the co-founder noted that significant technical hurdles remain. Developers must work to make cryptographic proofs cheaper and more accessible and solve the complex coordination required for secure parallel work execution across the network.
