CFTC Approval Gives Coinbase Full Control of Derivatives Stack

CFTC Approval — The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has approved Coinbase‘s application to operate as a futures commission merchant, granting the exchange full vertical control over its derivatives trading infrastructure.

The approval allows Coinbase to launch Coinbase Clearing, a new entity that will handle the clearing and settlement of futures contracts for its retail and institutional clients. This move brings the final layer of the derivatives stack—clearing—in-house, following the exchange’s previous acquisitions of a designated contract market and a swap execution facility.

Coinbase Clearing will accept USD Coin (USDC) as collateral and will operate with 24/7 settlement capabilities. The company stated that margined products, such as perpetual futures, will continue to be cleared through existing third-party partners for the time being.

The regulatory green light marks a significant milestone in Coinbase’s strategy to build a comprehensive, integrated derivatives platform. By owning every layer, from execution to clearing, the exchange aims to reduce reliance on external partners and potentially offer more competitive pricing and product features to its users.
