Bitcoin Art Society’s ‘Mosaic’ Project Turns Satoshis into a Billion-Layer Artwork

The-Art-Hidden-in-Bitcoin

The Bitcoin Art Society (BAS) is showcasing ‘Mosaic,’ a continuously evolving generative artwork that translates the numerical properties of individual satoshis into a vast visual and sonic composition.

Created by the artist known as BitArt, the project uses the ordinal number and position of each satoshi as inputs for a rule-based system that determines color, spatial coordinates, and musical parameters. The artwork now contains over 127 million tiles and one billion layers, a scale so large that viewing every layer would take more than 30 years.

The project treats the Bitcoin network itself as artistic material, with its appearance shaped by the accumulated history of human transactions rather than a pre-designed image. BAS, founded by Serge Ajamian and Yara Al Chammaa, aims to support the creation and preservation of digital art on Bitcoin, a mission informed by Al Chammaa’s experience of physical art destruction in the 2020 Beirut port explosion.

Mosaic will be presented on a large architectural scale at the Bitcoin Amsterdam 2026 conference, following previous immersive exhibitions like one at the Galileo Galilei Planetarium in Buenos Aires accompanied by live musicians.
