Ex-CFTC Commissioner Mersinger to Exit Blockchain Association After Key Bill Fails

Former CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger will step down as CEO of the Blockchain Association and leave the crypto advocacy group by the end of 2026, following the failure of a major legislative priority in Congress.
Mersinger, who joined the association in June 2025 after resigning from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, will depart as CEO on October 16. The group’s former chief executive, Kristin Smith, will return as interim CEO while continuing her role as president of the Solana Policy Institute.
The organization cited Mersinger’s work on stablecoin legislation and efforts to provide regulatory clarity at the SEC and CFTC. However, it notably did not mention the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bill the association had strongly supported, which recently failed to gain enough votes in a Senate cloture motion.
In a statement, Mersinger said she joined the industry from the CFTC because she believed it deserved clear rules and a unified voice in Washington. The legislative setback is widely expected to leave the clarity bill in limbo until at least 2027.
