Solana Network Speeds Up Block Production by 17%

Solana network speeds up — The Solana blockchain has accelerated its block production by reducing its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, a 17% speed increase that went into effect on Friday.

The change means applications receive updates on network state more quickly, which can reduce instances of failed or poorly priced trades. However, the overall transaction capacity of the network remains unchanged because each slot is now permitted to carry proportionally less computation and data.

This adjustment also shortens the length of a Solana epoch to approximately 30 hours and reduces the time window for validators to control a slot. The faster clock leaves less time for offline signing and delayed transaction approvals.

While a further reduction to a 200-millisecond target has been proposed, no mainnet deployment date for that change has been set. The update represents a fine-tuning of network performance rather than a fundamental scaling upgrade.
