Alchemy-Style Gold Creation ‘Infinite Mint Bug’ Fuels Bitcoin Scarcity Debate

A U.S. fusion startup’s claim to produce gold has sparked a debate over commodity scarcity and whether it strengthens Bitcoin’s ‘digital gold’ value proposition.

Marathon Fusion says its nuclear transmutation process, using a fusion reaction to turn mercury-197 into stable gold, could theoretically increase the global gold supply. This potential for an “infinite mint bug” in the centuries-old store of value has drawn comparisons from Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong to the lab-grown diamond industry, where prices plummeted as supply scaled.

Armstrong argued the development highlights Bitcoin’s superior scarcity. “But you can’t invent anything that will increase Bitcoin supply. There will only ever be 21M,” he said. Marathon’s researchers acknowledge current production is microscopic, with hopes to reach milligram quantities next year.

Precious metals experts, however, stress the immense gap between scientific proof and economical, large-scale production. Nikos Kavalis of Metals Focus noted, “We are nowhere near a stage where we can talk about production significance,” suggesting gold miners’ jobs are safe for the foreseeable future.
