Ethereum Moves Toward Gas Fee Payments Without Holding ETH

gas fee payments — Ethereum is advancing a feature that would allow users to pay transaction fees without needing to hold ETH, a development co-founder Vitalik Buterin says is progressing quickly.

The functionality, known as Frame Transactions, was formally included in the network’s recent Hegotá upgrade. It enables a third party, such as an application or a wallet, to sponsor a user’s transaction fees, potentially paying with a different token or through an alternative billing method.

Buterin noted that the technical work has accelerated since the feature’s inclusion in the protocol upgrade last month. This development is part of a broader push to improve the user experience on Ethereum by abstracting away the complexity of managing native gas tokens for everyday interactions.

The move could lower barriers to entry for new users and simplify processes for decentralized applications seeking to onboard customers. It represents a step toward more flexible transaction fee mechanics on the world’s second-largest blockchain.
