Crypto Hacks Cost $1.26 Billion in Q3 as Bitcoin Surged 40%

Crypto Hacks — The cryptocurrency market saw over $1.26 billion lost to hacks and exploits in the third quarter of 2026, even as Bitcoin rallied 40% to lead a major asset class rally.
According to data from security firm CertiK, the industry suffered 247 security incidents during the quarter. The cumulative losses for the year so far have reached $2.68 billion, with September being the worst month for exploits.
Bitcoin closed the quarter at approximately $84,200, significantly outperforming other major assets despite rising Treasury yields. The rally was fueled by billions of dollars flowing into crypto-related exchange-traded funds and strong performances from several altcoins, leading analysts to believe a new bull market is underway.
The persistent security issues present a reputational challenge for the crypto industry, contrasting sharply with the influx of institutional capital and positive price action. The scale of the losses, while smaller than the volumes entering ETFs, highlights ongoing vulnerabilities within the ecosystem.
