Circle acquires Tazapay in $400M deal for emerging market expansion

Circle acquires Tazapay — Stablecoin issuer Circle has acquired cross-border payments platform Tazapay for $400 million, a strategic move to expand USDC’s reach in emerging markets where rival Tether has long held dominance.
The acquisition provides Circle with Tazapay’s established network of local payment rails and regulatory licenses across Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. These are connections that industry experts say would otherwise take “years to build” from scratch.
Analysts note that the deal signals the “next battleground is in emerging markets” for stablecoins. Circle’s USDC, the second-largest stablecoin, has traditionally been strong in developed markets and within decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, while Tether’s USDT has seen massive adoption for remittances and trading in regions with less stable local currencies.
By integrating Tazapay’s infrastructure, Circle aims to make it easier for businesses and individuals in these regions to access, send, and settle payments using USDC, directly challenging Tether’s position.
