Cardano Joins Race to Power AI Agent Payments with x402 Integration

AI agent payments — The Cardano blockchain has been integrated into the x402 software kit, joining Solana and XRP Ledger in a competition to become a payment rail for AI agents and applications.

The x402 standard leverages the internet’s ‘402 Payment Required’ response code to enable automated, pay-per-use transactions directly within web requests. This allows AI agents to pay for services without requiring traditional accounts or subscription models.

Cardano’s implementation, released in TypeScript, has successfully completed a test transaction on a pre-production network. However, it has not yet been demonstrated operating on the Cardano mainnet or processing commercial payments at scale.

The move positions Cardano alongside other smart contract platforms vying to capture a share of the emerging market for autonomous machine-to-machine payments, where AI agents could use crypto tokens like ADA to transact for computational resources or data.
