HSBC Debuts Stablecoin in Hong Kong Wallet App
HSBC stablecoin — HSBC has launched its own Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, HKDG, directly within its PayMe digital wallet app, making it available to the service’s three million users.
The launch, which went live on Friday, marks a significant step for the global banking giant into the realm of tokenized deposits. HSBC is positioning HKDG as a “regulated” stablecoin, aiming to provide a digital payment alternative for everyday transactions within the popular PayMe ecosystem.
This move follows the bank’s earlier announcement of plans to issue a stablecoin and represents a live test of whether a bank-issued digital token can gain traction as a form of everyday money. The initiative is part of a broader trend of traditional financial institutions exploring digital asset issuance, particularly in Hong Kong’s evolving regulatory landscape for virtual assets.
The stablecoin is initially available for peer-to-peer transfers between PayMe users. HSBC has indicated it will explore additional use cases, including merchant payments and integration with public blockchain networks, in the future.
