Mt. Gox Delays Bitcoin Repayments to 2027, Holding $2.8B

Mt. Gox delays — The trustee for the defunct Mt. Gox exchange has postponed the deadline for repaying creditors to October 2027, citing incomplete verification procedures for many claimants.

The rehabilitation trustee announced the extension in a statement, noting that a significant number of creditors have not yet completed the necessary steps to receive their Bitcoin. Approximately 140,000 BTC, valued at roughly $2.8 billion at current prices, remains to be distributed.

The long-running saga stems from the 2014 collapse of Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, after it lost hundreds of thousands of coins in a hack. The repayment process, known as rehabilitation, has been repeatedly delayed over the past decade.

The latest postponement pushes the final distribution date back by a full year from the previous October 2026 deadline. The move alleviates immediate market fears of a large, concentrated sell-off from creditors receiving their long-lost Bitcoin.
