Claude AI Cracks NSA Curve Mystery, Bitcoin’s Secp256k1 Unaffected

NSA curve mystery — Anthropic’s Claude AI has solved a 25-year cryptographic mystery, determining that unexplained numbers supplied by the U.S. National Security Agency for certain elliptic curves originated from a basic random-number generator.

The AI model traced five unexplained seeds for NIST elliptic curves, which had long been suspected of potentially hiding a backdoor, to an ordinary program using timestamps from 1997 and 1998. The finding makes the existence of a hidden NSA backdoor in those specific curves less likely and suggests no immediate action is required for users of the NIST curves, though questions remain about how some elements were selected.

Bitcoin‘s underlying cryptography was not part of the investigation and remains unaffected. The Bitcoin network uses the secp256k1 elliptic curve, which is a simpler, well-understood curve with little room to conceal a cryptographic weakness. The research focused solely on curves proposed by the NSA and standardized by NIST.

While the discovery alleviates one historical concern, it does not address the separate, long-term threat quantum computers pose to cryptographic systems, including those used in Bitcoin. The security of secp256k1 against classical computing attacks remains intact.
