Math Professor Warns AI Pivot Could Threaten Bitcoin Security

AI Pivot Threaten Bitcoin — A mathematics professor has warned that a pivot by Bitcoin miners towards artificial intelligence (AI) could pose a threat to the network’s foundational security model.

Micah Warren, an associate professor at the University of Oregon, explained on a Bitcoin Magazine podcast that the network’s security is upheld by miner incentives, which make classic attacks like double-spends unlikely. He argued that the primary risk is not a rogue actor breaking cryptography but a shift in miner behavior, particularly if they are presented with more profitable alternatives like AI compute.

Warren highlighted the concept of a “feather fork,” where a minority of miners could attempt to censor transactions, as a more plausible threat than a 51% attack. He also discussed the risk of censorship if governments or large institutions gain significant stakes in mining operations, potentially creating a market for “clean” versus “blacklisted” bitcoin.

The core of his analysis suggests that Bitcoin’s resilience depends on maintaining robust economic incentives for miners to secure the network honestly, a balance that could be disrupted by external technological shifts like AI.
