Researchers Propose Zcash-Style Privacy Design for Bitcoin Transfers

Zcash-style privacy design — Cryptography researchers have published a new technical specification outlining a design to bring Zcash-style privacy to Bitcoin transactions, potentially enabling fully shielded transfers on the network.

The proposal, titled “Shielded Bitcoin,” details a system that would hide the sender, receiver, and transaction amount on the Bitcoin blockchain. The design is modeled on the privacy technology used by Zcash, which employs zero-knowledge proofs to conceal transaction data. The researchers state that the current specification focuses on the core shielded transaction logic, leaving the mechanisms for how Bitcoin would enter and exit the shielded system to be addressed in a future paper.

This theoretical work highlights ongoing efforts within the crypto research community to enhance Bitcoin’s fungibility and privacy, which are seen by some as limitations of its current transparent ledger. The proposal remains a design document and is not an implementation, representing an early step in a long development process that would require broad community consensus to ever be adopted by the Bitcoin network.
