Shielded Bitcoin Proposal Uses ZK Proofs for Private Transactions

Researchers have proposed a method called Shielded Bitcoin to add private transactions to the Bitcoin network without requiring a protocol soft fork.

The concept, explained by Misha Komarov of alloc/init, would use zero-knowledge proofs to conceal the sender, receiver, and amount in a Bitcoin transfer. The system would operate without custodians or bridges, leveraging Bitcoin PIPEs (Partially Interactive Proof of Equivalence) to enable the privacy layer.

Komarov positioned the research proposal against existing privacy coins like Monero and Zcash, suggesting it could offer similar functionality directly on Bitcoin. He also addressed potential challenges, including the ‘small privacy set’ problem for early adopters and the block space requirements for larger shielded transactions.

The discussion highlighted potential use cases ranging from protection against ‘wrench attacks’ to corporate treasury management and institutional dark pools. The proposal remains in the research phase and is not a finished product.
