quantum threat — Recent engineering advances in quantum computing have made the potential threat to Bitcoin‘s cryptographic security more tangible within the next decade, according to an analysis in Bitcoin Magazine.

Two key milestones have been reached. First, new quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes have reduced the number of physical qubits needed to create a stable logical qubit by a factor of ten, significantly lowering the engineering overhead for a viable machine.

Second, experiments by Google using its Sycamore and Willow chips have provided evidence supporting a core assumption: that bundling more physical qubits can reduce overall system noise and data corruption, a prerequisite for functional quantum computation.

While a quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin’s encryption remains theoretical, the convergence of improved error correction, experimental validation of fundamentals, and the application of AI to algorithm and circuit design suggests the timeline for a viable threat may be accelerating.
