MicroStrategy Buys Back $139M in Stock, Pauses Bitcoin Purchases

MicroStrategy buys back — Nasdaq-listed MicroStrategy has opted to repurchase $139 million of its own preferred stock instead of adding to its massive bitcoin treasury, according to an SEC filing.
The company, the world’s largest corporate holder of bitcoin, bought 1.42 million shares of its Series A Preferred Stock (STRC) between September 8 and 13. This marks a continued shift from its previously predictable bitcoin acquisition strategy, which it resumed only briefly in late August after a 10-week pause.
MicroStrategy’s bitcoin holdings remain unchanged at 845,050 BTC, valued at approximately $66.2 billion at current prices. The firm also reported holding $6.4 billion in USD assets across two cash reserves.
The company’s shares (MSTR) traded higher on Monday despite the stock having lost over 75% of its value since a November 2024 peak. CEO Phong Le has previously defended the firm’s recent, limited bitcoin sales, stating the company aims to maintain a “bullet-proof balance sheet” and comparing its role to that of “J.P. Morgan of the crypto economy.”
