SEC’s Top Crypto Lawyer Details Path for Digital Asset Custody

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s chief counsel for crypto, Taylor Lindman, has outlined the agency’s ongoing work to establish a regulatory framework for digital asset custody, aiming to integrate the technology with traditional securities rules.
Speaking at a CoinDesk event in Washington, D.C., Lindman described the effort as focusing on the “boring” but essential rules needed to bring crypto into the regulated financial system. The pending custody proposal is a central part of this agenda, alongside other initiatives like a tokenization exemption and rules for crypto offerings.
Lindman, who leads the SEC’s Crypto Task Force, indicated the agency is working to help financial firms become more comfortable with blockchain technology and crypto assets. This regulatory push is proceeding as Congress has yet to pass comprehensive crypto legislation.
The SEC’s move to finalize custody rules represents a significant step for institutional adoption, setting standards for how registered investment advisers and other entities can hold clients’ digital assets.
