Bitcoin Surges Past $86,000 Despite Failed Clarity Act Legislation

Bitcoin Surges — Bitcoin’s price surged past $86,000 this week, shrugging off the recent failure of a major U.S. crypto market structure bill in Congress.
The price of the leading cryptocurrency jumped nearly 7% over a 24-hour period on Monday, reaching as high as $86,247, despite the Clarity Act being blocked by lawmakers the previous week. The bill, which aimed to establish clear regulatory rules for digital assets, failed to progress after Democrats raised objections, primarily concerning ethics and potential conflicts of interest.
The central sticking point for Democratic lawmakers was the conflict of interest posed by the Trump family’s crypto holdings. President Donald Trump’s financial disclosure reported roughly $1.4 billion in crypto-related income, and he has urged lawmakers to pass the “powerful” legislation. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren told Congress the bill “posed a massive risk to families.”
Despite the legislative setback, Bitcoin has continued a strong run that began in August, up 10% over the last 30 days. The rally was initially fueled by a U.S. Treasury announcement to expand liquidity operations. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs also saw nearly $593 million in net inflows late last week, according to data from Farside Investors.
