Bitcoin holders take profits at slower pace than previous market tops

Bitcoin holders — Bitcoin investors are realizing profits from the recent rally, but the pace of this selling is notably slower than during previous market peaks, according to on-chain data analyzed by CoinDesk.
The net realized profit/loss metric, which tracks dollar gains locked in when coins move on-chain at a price higher than their last transaction, shows investors have realized $2.4 billion in profits recently. This activity follows Bitcoin’s 44% surge this quarter to nearly $85,000, its strongest performance since late 2024.
Analysts treat the prior transfer price as a cost basis, meaning if a coin last moved at $40,000 and is later sold at $84,000, the $44,000 difference is recorded as realized profit. The current profit-taking, while present, is occurring at a far slower rate compared to prior market tops.
This slower pace of liquidation is viewed by some market observers as a positive sign, suggesting holders may be exhibiting more patience or a longer-term outlook despite the significant price appreciation.
