DWF Labs Research Finds Bitcoin ETF Flows Follow Price, Not Predict It

Bitcoin ETF flows — Investors in US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are largely reacting to price moves rather than driving them, according to new research from market maker DWF Labs.
The firm’s analysis of 694 trading days since the ETFs launched in January 2024 found a strong correlation between daily flows and Bitcoin’s price performance over the preceding five days, but almost no correlation with its performance over the following five days. “ETF flows confirm moves; they don’t predict them,” DWF stated in its report published October 22.
The data shows investors pulled money from the funds during seven of the eight times Bitcoin’s price dropped at least 15%, while all nine rallies of that magnitude drew net inflows. The heaviest withdrawals occurred during the most recent major sell-offs, with a net $6.9 billion pulled between October 2025 and February 2026, followed by $8.2 billion during the May-June decline.
DWF noted that some ETF activity likely comes from investors hedging positions, estimating roughly a fifth of flows may be paired with short bets in CME futures. The report also found that while the frequency of major Bitcoin sell-offs has decreased since the ETF launch, the median drawdown remains comparable to previous periods at over 21%.
