Ethereum Economic Zone Tests Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction

The Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) has successfully tested an atomic transaction moving funds directly from Ethereum’s mainnet to a layer-2 rollup, a step toward unifying the fragmented scaling ecosystem.

On Tuesday, EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez shared a transaction log showing a cross-chain call carrying 0.001 ETH and a state update for a rollup, calling it the project’s first atomic L1-to-L2 transaction. In an atomic transaction, all linked actions across different networks either succeed completely or are all reversed if any part fails, eliminating the risk of funds being lost in transit.

The EEZ framework, detailed by developers in March, is designed to enable rollups to interact with each other and with Ethereum mainnet within a single transaction without relying on third-party bridges. The project aims to reconnect liquidity and applications currently siloed across separate L2 networks.

Jakub Gregus, co-founder of DeFi protocol Hydration, described the demonstration as “one of the most important milestones” in crypto, suggesting the technology could directly benefit Ethereum by reducing fragmentation.
