Grayscale Calls Binance Hack a ‘Temporary Setback’ for Crypto Markets

Binance hack — Grayscale’s head of research, Zach Pandl, has described the record $6.3 billion hack of Binance as a likely ‘temporary setback’ for crypto markets, highlighting the security safeguards of institutional custody solutions.
In a report, Pandl noted the incident underscores the importance of institutional-grade custody, such as that used by U.S.-based crypto exchange-traded products, which typically offer offline storage, multi-signature wallets, and insurance policies. The comments came as the broader crypto market showed signs of recovery following the breach.
The hack, which the FBI attributed to North Korea, triggered a sell-off that saw Bitcoin briefly fall below $77,000 and BNB drop over 8%. By Wednesday, the total crypto market capitalization had rebounded 2% over 24 hours to approximately $2.63 trillion, though it remained about $100 billion below its level from the prior week.
Separately, Bitwise’s head of research, André Dragosch, suggested recent outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs were related to a short-term risk-off environment rather than a structural shift in institutional sentiment.
