Japan’s JPYC stablecoin misses first-year circulation target

JPYC stablecoin — Japan’s leading yen-pegged stablecoin, JPYC, has fallen significantly short of its circulation target in its first year, reaching only about a quarter of its goal.
According to CEO Noritaka Okabe, JPYC had 3.2 billion yen ($21.4 million) in circulation as of its first anniversary, far below the 12.1 billion yen that had been issued. Okabe attributed the slow corporate adoption to a regulatory cap limiting Type II funds transfer providers to transactions of 1 million yen or less.
The CEO acknowledged the disappointing growth in an interview, stating, “Frankly, I don’t think it’s growing.” This performance stands in contrast to several high-profile partnerships the stablecoin issuer secured, including with firms like AZ-COM Maruwa, SBJ Bank, and LINE NEXT.
Despite the weak first-year figures, Okabe has set an ambitious target for the project’s second year, aiming for a tenfold increase in circulation. The results highlight the challenges of scaling regulated stablecoin adoption even within a supportive jurisdiction like Japan.
