SEC Flags Tokenization as High-Risk Priority for 2027 Examinations

tokenization high-risk — The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has added the tokenization of securities to its list of high-risk examination priorities for fiscal year 2027, marking its first explicit inclusion of the trend.
In its priorities report released on October 23, 2026, the SEC identified tokenization as an emerging trend it will examine under Regulation SCI, which governs the security and reliability of critical market infrastructure. The agency will also focus on tokenization at clearing agencies, listing it alongside default management and operational risks.
For the second consecutive year, cryptocurrencies were not included as a standalone examination category. The SEC last featured a dedicated section on crypto assets in its 2025 priorities.
The move comes as traditional finance deepens its involvement with tokenized assets. Earlier in October, a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange filed to launch a platform for trading tokenized shares of over 60 U.S.-listed companies.
