Ethereum Sepolia Testnet Triples Block Gas Limit in Major Upgrade

Ethereum Sepolia testnet — Ethereum’s Sepolia test network has successfully activated a major upgrade, increasing its block gas limit to nearly 200 million, more than three times the current capacity of the main Ethereum network.

The upgrade, named Glamsterdam, was activated on the Sepolia testnet on October 6. The new limit of approximately 200 million units of gas per block dramatically exceeds the mainnet’s current limit of around 60 million. Testnets like Sepolia are used by developers to trial protocol changes and smart contracts in an environment that mimics the main blockchain before deployment.

This substantial increase is a key test for scaling Ethereum’s transaction throughput. A higher gas limit allows more transactions and complex operations to be processed in each block, potentially reducing network congestion and fees. The successful implementation on Sepolia marks a critical step in evaluating the stability and performance of such a change.

The results from Sepolia will inform developers and the broader Ethereum community as they consider future adjustments to the main network’s parameters. No timeline for a similar change on the Ethereum mainnet has been announced.
