crypto corruption risks — Members of the European Parliament have formally called for the European Commission to address corruption risks associated with crypto assets in its upcoming anti-corruption strategy.

The Parliament adopted a non-binding resolution on Thursday, urging the Commission to focus on risks linked to digital assets, opaque ownership structures, and digital tools. The resolution also calls for stronger efforts to trace, freeze, confiscate, and recover criminal proceeds.

The Commission’s strategy, expected by the end of 2026, is intended to complement the EU’s anti-corruption directive, which harmonized definitions of corruption offenses and minimum penalties across the bloc when it entered force in May.

Beyond crypto and asset recovery, the lawmakers’ priorities include stricter public procurement rules, clearer lobbying regulations, and stronger protections for whistleblowers and investigative journalists.
