Absa Becomes First African Bank to Offer Bitcoin Custody Services

South-Africas-Absa-Becomes-First-Bank-on-the-Continent-to-Custody-Bitcoin

South Africa’s Absa Bank has become the first lender on the African continent to offer Bitcoin custody, expanding institutional access to digital assets on the continent.

Absa will provide custody services primarily for Bitcoin, though it plans to support other digital assets, with its initial focus on serving institutional clients. According to a Bloomberg report, Rob Downes, head of digital assets at Absa’s corporate and investment banking unit, stated Bitcoin is the largest asset the bank will custody initially.

The move follows a global trend of traditional financial institutions integrating digital asset services. It comes as South Africa has established a clearer regulatory environment, issuing hundreds of licenses to virtual asset service providers and attracting professional investment.

Chainalysis data from 2025 showed South Africa’s on-chain transaction volume reached $36 billion, ranking second in Sub-Saharan Africa behind Nigeria. The South African market is characterized as more institutional compared to other African nations.
