ECB to Invest Reserves in Tokenized Bonds via New Pontes Platform

tokenized bonds — The European Central Bank (ECB) announced plans to invest a portion of its own reserve funds in euro-denominated tokenized securities, marking a significant step into blockchain-based financial markets.
The purchases will be settled in central bank money using a new Eurosystem platform called Pontes. This platform is designed to bridge the ECB’s payment system with tokenized finance, allowing for wholesale transactions on blockchain rails.
The ECB stated the investments would constitute a “small portion” of its reserves, with the exact size and timing to be determined following preparatory work. The move provides the central bank with direct exposure to the growing digital asset ecosystem.
The Pontes platform is expected to be fully implemented by 2028. This initiative represents a concrete move by a major global central bank to integrate traditional finance with blockchain technology for its own balance sheet management.
