VanEck Says Bitcoin Community Acknowledges Quantum Computing Threat

Speaking to CNBC, Sigel noted that while Bitcoin’s decentralized governance can slow progress, there is a clear technological path toward quantum resistance. “The community has recognized the scope of the issue,” he said, adding that a framework for upgrading the system is in place and more developments are expected in the coming years.
Major industry players are already working on post-quantum cryptography. Coinbase has announced plans for a post-quantum signing pipeline, and a consortium including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Block has formed to fund and engineer open-source solutions like BIP-360, which aims to mitigate quantum risks.
While functional quantum computers exist today, a machine capable of breaking Bitcoin’s cryptography does not. Developers are preparing by testing quantum-resistant signatures on live sidechains, highlighting the ecosystem’s proactive, though measured, approach to the long-term challenge.
