FCA Issues Final Crypto Guidance Ahead of UK Authorization Window
FCA final guidance — The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has published its final guidance for crypto asset service providers just two weeks before the authorization application window opens on October 1, 2026.
The regulator’s 99-page document details the requirements firms must meet to operate legally under the new Financial Services and Markets Act regime. The FCA emphasized that overseas firms serving UK retail customers must also obtain authorization, clarifying a point of significant international concern.
Despite the impending start of applications, the FCA confirmed that firms currently operating under temporary registration can continue trading. The new permanent regime will not be fully enforced until October 8, 2027, providing a one-year transition period for successful applicants to comply fully.
The comprehensive guidance covers areas including prudential requirements, data reporting, consumer communications, and financial crime prevention. The FCA stated it will begin assessing applications as soon as the window opens, urging firms to prepare their submissions thoroughly.
