MicroStrategy Halts Bitcoin Purchases Again, Focuses on Stock Buyback

MicroStrategy Halts Bitcoin — MicroStrategy has paused its bitcoin accumulation for the second time in months, shifting capital to a major stock repurchase program instead.
The Nasdaq-listed company, which holds over 845,000 BTC, stopped buying bitcoin last week, just one week after resuming purchases following a 10-week hiatus. According to a regulatory filing and an announcement from founder Michael Saylor on September 8, the firm instead repurchased $176 million of its own stock (MSTR) and doubled the size of its digital credit securities repurchase program from $1 billion to $2 billion.
As of September 7, 2026, MicroStrategy’s treasury holds 845,050 bitcoins and $6.5 billion in USD assets. The company’s average purchase price for its bitcoin holdings is $63,730 per coin. Shares of MicroStrategy traded more than 3% lower following the news.
The firm has periodically paused its bitcoin buys since June to build cash reserves and buy back stock, with CEO Phong Le recently defending past sales as creating a “bullet-proof balance sheet.” The company, which pivoted to a primary bitcoin treasury strategy in 2020, allows investors to gain exposure to bitcoin through its publicly traded shares.
