- Snapshot September 2026
Coinbase is how a large share of US retail still touches bitcoin. That is the product: bank-linked on-ramp, a short list of assets, and a public-company compliance wrapper. It is not trying to win the perpetual-futures volume war with Binance or Bybit.
Fee literacy is the whole game here. Simple Buy hides the cost in spread and a convenience fee — fine for a $50 experiment, painful for anything you repeat. Coinbase Advanced publishes a maker/taker ladder that still starts around 0.40% / 0.60% for small volume, well above offshore majors. If you are going to use Coinbase more than once a month, Advanced is the interface; Simple is the trap.
Who it is for
US and other supported users who want fiat in/out under a listed company, and who will actually switch to Advanced. Also a default for people who will never self-custody — which is a trade-off, not a virtue.
Watch-outs
Asset availability is political. Staking, rewards and which tokens you can buy change with regulators. Public filings are a feature; they are also a reminder that this is a company, not a protocol. Not financial advice.
What works
- Public company, US banking rails, and a brand your relatives have heard of
- Advanced trade is usable once you leave the Simple Buy flow
- Custody / Prime for institutions — retail is not the whole business
What to watch
- Retail fees and spreads are among the highest of the majors
- Pair list and derivatives access lag offshore venues
- Support and account reviews can freeze you at the worst time
